General Contractor: Balfour Beatty/Smoot, A Joint Venture
The primary objective of the project was to replace the anchors that support the stone cladding to restore the structural integrity of the stone cladding system. This required the removal of more than 17,000 marble panels, refabricating each stone for the new anchor system and reinstalling each stone in its original location, consistent with the original design intent. The refabrication and reinstallation of each stone requires consistent monitoring and attention to detail. The repetitive nature of the project made it difficult, however the extremely tight tolerances, detailed stone tracking and the artistic value of each stone must be maintained. To perform the work, PLN used a custom on-site fabrication facility to refabricate the stones for the new anchor system hardware.

As the main focal point of the space, the iconic three story stair is constructed of steel stringers and painted with a high gloss, luminous auto body finish. Treads, landings, and guardrails are all glass, and structural support is provided by a one inch center rod attached to the slab above. With minimal diagonal bracing and suspended landings, the stairs appear to float in the three story opening. The installation of the stair took over 2,000 night hours to complete; with over 800 machined parts and 1,000 screws. The specification for the orange paint is not commercially available in the United States. After securing the paint through a dedicated search, the paint process included a primer, application of two white base coats, three coats of orange paint, covered by four coats of lacquer, a wet sanding, and buffing by hand for a show car finish.

Project Name: Smithsonian Institution Arts & Industries Building Revitalization - Shell: Exterior Enclosure & Structure, Washington, DC
Architect: Ennead Architects/SmithGroupJJR
Engineer: McMullan & Associates, Inc.
General Contractor: Grunley Construction Company, Inc.
The project required removal of the majority of the existing roof structures and replacement with modern steel components. The building has four quads consisting of five individual areas that are all unique, and were systematically demolished and rebuilt utilizing modern steel components while matching the fabric of the original design. The four quads are integral to one another and required significant in-house engineering to ensure hit-out of new and existing structural members between quads. Each quad consisted of approximately 2,200 pieces of steel weighing 125 tons, 8,000 pieces of hardware and 26,000 square feet of decking. A portion of the existing steel was reused in the structure and required significant remediation to the meet the new structural requirements.
