Start your day with a fresh look at surety bonding. Our discussion will include a primer on bonding, the application process, and tips to maximize your company’s surety credit along with an overview of the legal requirements involved in being a bonded contractor.

About The Presenters

Shannon J. Briglia, Esq.
BrigliaMcLaughlin, PLLC

Ms. Briglia focuses her practice on advising construction industry participants in risk management and disputes. She has litigated construction contract disputes and surety cases in federal and state courts in Maryland, Virginia, the District of Columbia, Michigan, Florida, and Texas, and has presented arbitrations and mediations before panels and solo neutrals in many other states. Ms. Briglia is an active member of the ABA’s Fidelity and Surety Law Committee, the Forum on Construction Law, and the International Association of Defense Counsel. She is the past Chair of the Virginia State Bar’s Board of Directors of the Construction and Public Contracts Section. She has authored numerous articles and book chapters and speaks regularly to industry groups on construction and surety topics. Ms. Briglia has been noted by Chambers USA for her outstanding success in representing construction and surety clients, and is "AV" rated by Martindale Hubbell as well as being ranked by her peers as a construction “Super Lawyer” in VA and DC.

Emily A. Brennan, Esq.
HMS Insurance Associates, Inc.

Ms. Brennan is the Assistant Vice President of Surety at HMS where handles the surety and insurance needs of contractors as well as offers contractual risk-management advice and counsel to the firm’s construction clients. Emily began her career as a surety underwriter before transitioning into claims and eventually serving as Vice President and Director of Bond Claims for a top-ten surety company. Her experience with complex construction matters enables her to offer clients constructive risk-management solutions based on real-world experiences. Emily graduated cum laude from the University of Baltimore, School of Law in 2005 with a concentration in Business Law. She is admitted to practice law in the State of Maryland, the District of Columbia, the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland and the Federal Bankruptcy Court. Emily serves on the Construction Law Council for the Maryland State Bar Association and is involved in several other construction industry associations. She is a licensed Insurance Producer and holds a Commercial Lines Coverage Specialist (CLCS) designation.
